The running back is often called the workhorse of the offence, as it is up to him to carry a big load. He is responsible for grinding out the tough yards on the ground, carrying the ball into the teeth of the defence. On many teams the running back is the featured player on the offence, and one of the best athletes on the team.

Running backs come in many shapes and sizes, from smallish quick types like Barry Sanders, with ankle breaking moves. To powerful brutes like Jerome 'the Bus' Bettis. The position doesn't have a fixed mold, since players rely on different strengths to advance the ball, and generally anyone who is hard to stop can play the position.

There are two kinds of backs, Tailbacks (often just called Running backs) and Fullbacks.

The tailback is the main ball carrier; he must primarily be good at getting yards, reading the defence and exploding into the holes that the offensive line creates. But he also has to be able to pass protect when a deep pass is called, or leave the backfield and run a pass route himself. Generally speaking a tailback is very involved on every snap of the game.

The fullback is bigger than the tailback and lines up closer to the line. He specializes in blocking and routinely smashes linemen and linebackers out of the way. Most of the time he is leading the way for the tailback, but every now and again when the offence just needs a yard or two the fullback will get the ball. It is very classic football to watch a powerful fullback power himself forward to get that first down.

What it takes

An ideal running back must have a blend of speed and power, to bull through some tacklers and escape others. Preferably he has the natural shiftiness and 'moves' to make people miss in the open field. A running back must be courageous as he will get hit many times during the game by the defense best tacklers, he must have the willpower to do this and keep running hard knowing it will happen again.

Finally a running back should have good hands, he is counted on to securely catch the ball on sweeps and tosses, and not fumble when he gets hit.

Overall

Running back is an exiting and varied position, well suited for tough athletes.

Quotes

Make sure when anyone tackles you he remembers how much it hurts.
Jim Brown, Hall of Fame Running Back

"It's probably similar to being in New York City and having a cab driver behind you and you're driving too slow. It's not the most pleasant thing."
Hall of Fame Running Back Barry Sanders, on what defensive backs who played against him compared him to.

It is better to give a lick than receive one. If anybody got in my way, I tried to run right through them.

Bo Jackson, Hall of Fame Running Back
